Frequently Asked Questions About Transfer Stations
How Do I Use a Transfer Station?
What is a Transfer Station?
Transfer stations are organized locations where waste and recyclables are temporary dropped off and then loaded for delivery to a landfill. Homewood Disposal currently operates three transfer stations. The East Hazel Crest and Park Forest stations are in Illinois, and the third is located in Valparaiso, Indiana. Garbage, yard waste and recycling material is brought to these locations from homes and business in our service area and beyond.
From here, garbage and yard waste is loaded into transfer trailers which take the material to landfills and composting sites. At the East Hazel Crest location, recycling material is unloaded separately and Diversified Recycling’s MRF (Material Recovery Facility) sorts and processes the recyclables.
All sites are open to the public and accept loads of garbage, yard waste and construction material. Yard waste is accepted April – November ONLY. We CANNOT accept household batteries, lithium batteries, items that contain rechargeable batteries, tires, electronic waste, liquids or hazardous material. Check our Hard to Handle section for disposal options for these items.
Our East Hazel Crest location is capable of accepting 53-foot recycling trailers.
