Renting a Dumpster in Chicago

Renting a dumpster in the city of Chicago and getting a permit may seem like a difficult and stressful task. It can be especially difficult with the limited space available to place a dumpster in the city of Chicago. Construction crews and project managers often have to temporarily place construction dumpsters on the street. Whether your Chicago project involves fire restoration, renovating condos or apartments, or construction debris, Homewood Disposal makes renting a dumpster easy and stress-free.

Do I Need a Permit for a Dumpster in Chicago?

Yes, the city of Chicago requires you to have a permit for your dumpster if you place it on the street. Due to limited space in Chicago, you may need to place your open-top bin on city streets, alleyways, or even sidewalks. When a roll-off container is set on city property a permit is required. However, if a dumpster is placed on personal property such as a driveway or within a construction site, a permit is not needed.

Do Other Towns and Villages Require A Dumpster Permit?

Outside the City of Chicago, in suburban towns, permit requirements vary. Some towns never require a permit, while other towns and villages might have limited days a dumpster can be on the property, or special regulations about flashing lights and cones around the dumpster. It’s best to contact the town and ensure you are covered, rather than receive an unexpected ticket or fine.

What is the Duration of a Chicago Permit?

The city of Chicago provides you with two permit duration options. One permit duration lasts three days, and the other permit lasts for 30 days. Your Chicago permit needs to be in place before the arrival of your dumpster container. In addition, the dumpster needs to be pulled from the site on the last day of the permit duration and cannot pulled the day after.

Three day permit example: If your dumpster arrives and is placed on a Monday, it will need to be retrieved on Wednesday. Please note, that while most of our dumpster rentals are for a length of 7 days, in the case of a three day permit, the rental would be for three days. We recommend a full month permit if customers think three days will be a tight time frame to use the dumpster.

How Do I Get a Permit in Chicago?

Other dumpster rental companies require you to obtain the permit for your open-top container, which adds additional stress to your project. When you rent a dumpster from Homewood Disposal, you do not have to worry about getting a permit. We will obtain the permit for you and ensure the permit duration fits your Chicago project needs.
