20 Yard Dumpsters – What Can They Hold?

The 20 yard dumpster is our most popular temporary dumpster size. It can handle a large volume of material and its higher walls hold larger items. Homewood Disposal provides a variety of dumpster sizes ranging from 6 yards to 30 yards for homeowners, businesses, and contractors. No matter the size of your project, our dumpster rental will meet your garbage, industrial, residential, construction and manufacturing needs. If you are still unsure of what dumpster to rent for your project, give us a call! Our experienced coworkers will help you find a dumpster that will best fit your project needs.

Our 20 yard dumpster interior dimensions measure 17 feet long, 7 feet wide and 4 feet high. Although the exact measurements may vary based on manufacturer, the capacity and volume of the 20 yard dumpster rental will be the same.

When you rent a 20 yard dumpster, the rental includes the disposal of 4 tons (8,000 pounds) of material.  It’s a lot of weight and it’s very rare that customers surpass 4 tons of material within their dumpster. Again, we do not charge extra for any weight under 4 tons within a 20 yard dumpster.

Here’s another way to think about it, a 20 yard dumpster can hold the same amount of material as about 6 pickup trucks. That’s about 110 –130 33-gallon trash bags. Furniture, roof shingles, flooring, drywall, and all other general waste are accepted in the 20 yard dumpster. Concrete, dirt, and hazardous waste are not accepted within our 20 yard dumpsters.

The 20 yard dumpster is our most popular size because it works well for a variety of projects. Here are some examples where a 20 yard dumpster works well.

  • Deck renovation
  • Roofing projects
  • Home clean outs
  • Kitchen or bathroom remodeling
  • Shed or garbage demolition
  • Tree removal

The word “Yard” in 20 yard dumpster refers to one cubic yard of area. It’s an industry standard used to reference the size of large waste containers. You can also think of 1 cubic yard as 3 feet x 3 feet x 3 feet.

A ton is 2000 pounds. What does a ton of waste look like? For example, a sheet of drywall that is 4′ x 8′ and 1/2″ thick, weighs about 52 pounds. So 38 sheets of drywall would weigh about a ton. Dumpsters contain a lot of waste. But, be sure your material remains below the top of the dumpster. When garbage is piled too high, it makes it difficult for the truck to secure the load. This poses a risk to others because debris could fall out of the dumpster during transport. Material stacked above the fill line can also slide off or, be blown off in the wind onsite. This poses a risk to you and your clean-up crew.
