Unload Garbage at Your Local Transfer Station

Garbage, yard waste and recycling material is brought to transfer stations from homes and business in our service area and beyond. From here, garbage and yard waste is loaded or “Transferred” into large transfer trailers which take the material to landfills and composting sites.

Yes, homeowners and businesses can use the transfer station to drop off large loads of waste material. Material is usually brought to the transfer station in trailers and trucks. We often serve roofing companies, trucks from local villages, landscaping companies, and building contractors. You pay for the amount of material you drop off. Waste is charged by the ton. We are not setup to accept small loads of household waste.

• There is 1 ton (2000 lb) minimum charge at the East Hazel Crest, and Park Forest, Illinois location.


• There is 1.5 ton (3000 lb) minimum charge at the Valparaiso, Indiana location.

Customers can pay with cash, check or credit card. Frequent customers can set up an account.

• We accept general waste, roofing shingles, loads of building materials, and yard waste.

• We CANNOT accept tires, electronic waste, liquids, engines, oils, or hazardous waste. Visit our

• Diversified Recycling shares the East Hazel Crest site and processes and sorts large loads of mixed recyclables brought in by garbage trucks and semi trailers.

When you arrive at the transfer station, your vehicle and the waste will be weighed and recorded. After you drop off your material, you’ll loop back to the scale to be weighed again. The scale house operator will re-weigh your vehicle without the waste. The difference between the full vehicle and the empty vehicle is the total.

1. Drive onto the truck scale.

2. Follow the instructions from scale house operator.


3. Drive to the unloading area.


4. Follow any instructions from the transfer station staff on site on where to drop off your waste within the transfer station. Some types of material are kept separate for recycling and repurposing.

5. Drive back around to the entrance and to the scale to be re-weighed and to make your payment

Yes, hard hats and safety vests are required when outside of your vehicle. Please stay near your vehicle at all times.

How Do I Use a Transfer Station?

Transfer stations are organized locations where waste and recyclables are temporary dropped off and then loaded for delivery to a landfill. Homewood Disposal currently operates three transfer stations.The East Hazel Crest and Park Forest stations are in Illinois, and the third is located in Valparaiso, Indiana. Garbage, yard waste and recycling material is brought to these locations from homes and business in our service area and beyond.

From here, garbage and yard waste is loaded into transfer trailers which take the material to landfills and composting sites. At the East Hazel Crest location, recycling material is unloaded separately and Diversified Recycling’s MRF (Material Recovery Facility) sorts and processes the recyclables.

All sites are open to the public and accept loads of garbage, yard waste and construction material. Yard waste is accepted April – November ONLY. We CANNOT accept tires, electronic waste, liquids or hazardous material. Check our Hard to Handle section for disposal options for these items.

Our East Hazel Crest location is capable of accepting 53-foot recycling trailers.

• There is 1 ton (2000 lb) minimum charge at the East Hazel Crest location.

• There is 1 ton (2000 lb) minimum charge at the Park Forest location.

• There is 1.5 ton (3000 lb) minimum charge at the Valparaiso location.

• Customers can bring loads of material that weigh less than 1 ton, but there is minimum charge of 1 ton or 1.5 tons.
