Contaminated Soil – Special Hauling and Disposal

What is Contaminated Soil?

contaminated soil

Contaminated soil contains any substance that exceeds naturally-occurring levels and poses a health risk.  Commercial areas and former industrial sites are at the biggest risk for soil contamination.  Some of the most common contaminants in commercial soils are: pesticides, petroleum products, asbestos, lead, and VOCs (volatile organic compounds.)

Exposure to contaminated soil can happen in a variety of ways:

  • Groundwater contamination (wells)
  • Breathing soil dust and particles
  • Absorbing through skin
  • Eating food grown in contaminated soil

Generators of Contaminated Soil

These areas often contain a large mix of contaminants such as lead, arsenic and petroleum products.  When these contaminants are combined, they can react and create even more toxic compounds.

Emissions and fluid leaks from vehicles end up on roadways and are washed onto nearby soils.

Old farmland soil may still be contaminated because of the use of lead-arsenate pesticides from 1910-1950.
