Rules for Homeowner E-Waste Disposal

Why Do Electronics Require Special Disposal?

Did you know your electronic products contain hazardous materials?  Yep, your old flat screen TV, laptop, iPod, and gaming console all contain hazardous chemicals.  In 2012, the state of Illinois banned the disposal of electronics into landfills under the Illinois Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act.  For more information on the Act, visit the Illinois EPA website.

Since disposal companies no longer pick up electronics with curbside garbage, Homewood Disposal Service created a special electronic waste pick up service.

What You Can Recycle Using the E-Waste Pick Up Service:

  • Televisions
  • Computers & printers
  • Portable digital music players
  • Video game consoles
  • Electronic mice
  • Cable & satellite receivers
  • DVD recorders
  • Fax machines

What You Cannot Recycle Using the E-Waste Pick Up Service:

  • Smoke Detectors
  • Fireworks
  • Infectious materials (i.e. medical waste)
  • Yard Waste (yard waste and grass clippings have their own bin)
  • Appliances

How do I Responsibly Recycle my Electronics?

  • Give your junk removal company a heads up! E-waste will not be picked up without notice.
  • Call your disposal service and find out if they offer an electronic junk removal service for your area.
  • Check with your local village hall if there are special collection events in your area
  • Contact your local electronic store, many have take back programs
  • Residential customers can schedule an e-waste pick up online or over the phone with Homewood Disposal Service.

Since e-waste requires special recycling, residential Homewood Disposal customers can schedule an e-waste pick up online.  As a reminder, please do not place any e-waste inside your carts. After scheduling your pick up, place electronics curbside next to your trash cart on your regular pick up day. A separate truck will remove your electronics and they will be properly recycled.
