Local Earth Day Events Focus on Education
Chicagoland and NW Indiana Earth Day events in 2023 focus on education and environmental stewardship.
What is Earth Day? According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Earth Day was first celebrated in the United States in 1970 as a way to bring awareness to environmental issues. In 1970 Congress also authorized the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). So, Earth Day and the EPA are closely tied together.
Over the years, Earth Day has served as a touch point to promote environmental efforts in local communities and throughout the United States. Local clean up days, water conservation, tree planting, safeguarding bees and pollinators, organic foods, renewable energy and recycling are a few favorite topics on Earth Day.
Here at Homewood Disposal Service, we like to use Earth Day as an opportunity inform and educate our neighbors about basic recycling. We’re taking part in and sponsoring a few local Earth Day programs again this year. We’ll join community groups to inform residents of the benefits of recycling and ensure everyone that yes, recycling really does work.
Our recycling mascot, Wendy the Waste Truck, will also be involved. He’ll meet up with friends in Frankfort, where kids can climb in the cab and ask their local garbage man recycling questions. We’re excited again this Earth Day to spend time with neighbors and together tell the story of recycling and sustainability to the next generation.
