Why Can’t I Dispose of My Electronics Curbside?

In 2012, the state of Illinois imposed the Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act that banned many electronics from landfills as these products contain hazardous material.  According to the ELPC, “These products [electronics] contain toxic materials such as lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium and beryllium.”  Incorrectly disposing toxic materials causes chemicals to contaminate the environment.  As a result, the toxins contaminate our food, water, and other natural resources.
