If you’re preparing to replace your old, leaky roof, metal roofs are becoming a popular option. Usually associated with commercial applications, residential solutions have become a trend in recent years. Metal roofs are worth the hype for many reasons. Metal roofs have suddenly become one of the fastest growing innovations in the residential home remodel market.  The Metal Roofing Alliance estimates that 750,000 metal roofs were installed on U.S. homes in 2015.

Durability

Metal roofs are strong, durable, and resistant to the elements.  A metal roof won’t wear down, corrode, or need to be replaced for several decades.  This is a superior advantage over your average asphalt or wooden shingle roof, which only have about a 20-year life span – if bad weather doesn’t get to them first, that is.  Metal roofs can withstand extraordinarily high winds without damage, unlike wood or asphalt shingles.  Resistant to fire, they also won’t spark from a lightning strike. The interlocking design also keeps unwanted critters out of your attic.  Did we mention they are immune to moisture?  That’s right, kiss your mold and rot damaged roof good-bye!

Efficiency

Metal roofs are also very energy efficient.  Depending on the material and color roofing you choose, metal roofs can reflect up to 95% of the solar heat that beams down onto your home.  Compare this to the approximate 5% that an asphalt roof does.  This keeps your home cooler in the summer, saving you big bucks on your energy bill.

Still not convinced?  Metal roofs are also better for the environment.  There are metal roofs on the market that are made of recycled materials.  Not only that, but the metal from your roof can also be recycled again when it’s lifespan ends.  This is a huge benefit because wood and asphalt shingles end up in a landfill since they are not recyclable.  (why not? Find facts)  The manufacturing process of a metal roof even produces fewer emissions  than the production of asphalt shingles, reducing your carbon footprint.  Scraps from installation can be also recycled, so it is a no waste process. Let’s face it – metal roofs are simply aesthetically appealing.  They also offer a larger variety of styles, colors, textures and designs to choose from than wood or asphalt shingles.
