Who Owns My Garbage Cart?
People don’t think about their garbage cart very often. But, if your cart breaks or you move to a new home, there might be some confusion about what to do with your cart.
First, you might be wondering who owns your garbage cart? Most likely a disposal service company, like Homewood Disposal, owns your cart. When your location has curbside service, the garbage carts are often included. The cart is leased or rented to the location while services are provided. Garbage carts do come with some responsibility, just like leasing a car. It’s your responsibility to clean the cart when needed. Additionally, make sure to only use it at your service address.
Homewood Disposal also has responsibilities related to your garbage carts. If there are any minor incidental damages to your carts, we will repair it for you. The carts will also be delivered and picked up from your location when ordering or canceling service.
Moving Tips
Please contact us and cancel your garbage service when you move. If you move out of your home, please do not take your garbage cart with you. Notify Homewood Disposal that you’re moving so that they can remove you from the responsibility for the cart. The next homeowner will schedule their own garbage service.
If you move into the area and would like to begin pickup service, you can do so online or over the phone. You can request service start up by calling (708) 798-1004. Residents can also order additional carts on Homewood Disposal’s website by typing in your city or village and selecting ‘Order a Cart’.
So, whether you’re moving to a new place or just curious about your garbage cart, we’re here to help.
FAQ About Garbage Carts
Cart Placement Tips
Here are some tips to make sure your carts get picked up safely and quickly.
– Place your carts 2 feet from other carts, cans, mailboxes, walls, trees, or vehicles. This allows trucks and employees to access the cans without damaging property.
– Face the cart forward, with the metal bar toward the street. Many garbage trucks have special mechanical arms or tippers that rely on the metal bar to assist in pickup.
– Place your carts side by side near the curb, not behind other carts. Carts stacked behind other carts are inaccessible to the trucks and employees. They must be individually moved on every pickup day, causing additional wear and tear on your cart.
The Benefits of Carts
Lastly, there are many benefits that come with weekly pickup service and garbage carts. Carts are convenient and easy to roll so you don’t have to worry about dragging heavy garbage bags to the curb. The attached cart lids also help keep animals out of your trash and prevent blowing garbage in your neighborhood. Carts are usually included with your service and, as mentioned, will be delivered to you, picked up from you, and repaired if there are minor damages.
