Technology Disposal – A Worldwide Issue

The World’s Fastest Growing Domestic Waste Stream

To Bangkok and Back…

You know that old computer monitor from the late 90’s that’s still sitting in your basement?  What about the giant box TV hiding in storage?  All of your old, unwanted electronics are considered e-waste.  According to joint author, International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), 44.7 million metric tons of electronic waste was produced in 2016. That’s equivalent to 9 Great Pyramids of Giza, or, 1.23 million fully loaded 40-ton trucks forming a line from New York to Bangkok and back! By 2021, approximately 52.2 million metric tons will be generated across the world. These statistics don’t include the 80% of electronic waste that is not documented.  The other 20% of e-waste estimates recoverable resources (gold, silver, copper, and more) valuing at approximately 55 billion dollars, which is more than the GDP (gross domestic product) of many countries.

Electronic Solutions in Your Community

Small and large appliances, heating and cooling equipment, and other electrical and electronic devices are the leading cause of e-waste. Instead of tossing your unwanted television in the trash or throwing out your old iPhone, dispose of your e-waste properly.  Participate in a local take-back program or partner with a disposal company that offers an electronic recycling program. It’s simple and efficient!

When looking for a new electronic, whether it’s a phone or a television, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), provides a free, and trusted, source, EPEAT. This site provides ratings that make it easy to select technology that is sustainable while simultaneously the most environmentally friendly on the market. Visit EPEAT to locate the nearest, greenest technology available!
