Transportation Industry Using Alternative Fuels

Moran Transportation Extends the Reach of their CNG-Powered Fleet

Taking the long way is something Moran Transportation can’t afford to do. The Midwest trucking company delivers time-sensitive freight to hundreds of Midwest businesses each day. To keep things running smoothly, Moran keeps over 200 trucks busy on Midwest roads. Twenty-five of the trucks in Moran’s fleet have been converted to run on environmentally friendly compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel. But, keeping their CNG trucks on the quickest route can be challenging. These unique trucks need to stop at special CNG stations to fuel up.

“Often, our drivers have to go out of their way to fuel up with CNG.”  said Michael R. Petzold of Moran Transportation.

Moran found a solution for quick CNG fueling near many of their routes. HDS Energy, a Chicago area CNG station near Halsted and I 80/94, is the perfect stop off point. Trucks traveling in the south suburbs of Chicago or near Northwest Indiana can quickly pull off the highway and fuel up.

“By fueling up at HDS stations, it allows us to save costs by not having the driver go out of their way for inexpensive fuel. They are also able to go to further points for deliveries and pickups. Each truck operates in excess of 50,000 miles each year,” says Petzold.

What is CNG Fuel?
CNG, also known as compressed natural gas, is an eco-friendly alternative to gasoline. Made by compressing natural gas (methane) down to less than 1% of its volume, CNG fuel is safer than gasoline and diesel because it is non-toxic and does not contaminate ground water. This natural gas is the same gas that you use daily to heat your home and water, cook on the stove and even to dry your clothes in a dryer. The use of CNG fuel is becoming more popular with both commercial and non-commercial vehicles.

Why Use CNG Fuel?
CNG fueling is better for the environment and comes at a lower cost. CNG allows companies like Moran Transportation to further expand their green initiatives and provides them with lower cost of energy and a reduced carbon footprint. Their CNG service trucks and straight trucks are more efficient to operate and better for our overall environment. Moran Transportation serves Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri.
